Dear Parents and Friends,
Thank you for visiting our class blog. First of all I would like to say a big welcome back to all of the students starting in Year 1 this year. It is so exciting to be starting a fun filled year with you.
This is our class blog and it is a platform to share our learning with you. Each week I will post an update to let you know what our class has been learning about. There may also be some links to activities that your child may use at home to consolidate their learning. So please don't forget to visit often and feel free to leave a friendly comment, the students will love it!
Last week was our first week of school. It was a busy week discussing school values, classroom rules and what it means to be a good learner. As a class we decided that these will be our classroom rules for 2017. We call them the Fantastic Five
In 1Red we will:
1. Be ready to listen and learn
2. Take care of each other
3. Show respect with our words and actions
4. Make good choices
5. Always try our best!
As well as developing classroom rules, we also spent some time learning routines that will make our class a safe and happy place for learning and give students a sense of security and self-discipline.

This week we move on to the concept of time. In Year 1 students learn to record and tell the time to the half-hour using analog and digital clocks. Students learn to describe the position of the hands on a clock for the half-hour and explain why the hour hand is halfway between the two hour-markers when the minute hand shows half-past. Below are some interactive resources to consolidate these skills.

This week we begin learning about fractions. In Year 1, students learn to recognise and model halves as two equal parts of a whole, e.g I folded my paper into two equal parts and now I have halves. They will also learn to use fraction notation for half.
Below are some resources to assist students in these areas.
Students will also use concrete materials to model half of a collection. Using mathematical language to communicate this understanding is also very important. Students learn to describe equal parts of a collection, e.g 'I have halves because the two parts have the same number of seedlings.'

We have had such a busy start to the term I have not had a chance to post any updates recently. The swimming program has certainly worn out our Year 1 students and it has been lovely to see them in a different environment learning to swim. This week we are learning about chance and probability in Mathematics. The students will learn to use language to describe the outcome of familiar activities, e.g 'will happen', won't happen' or 'might happen' or 'probably' Below are some resources that the students will use to develop their understanding and knowledge in this area.

Welcome back to Term 4 everyone. I hope you all had a restful break and a lovely holiday with your families. Today we started our first Math unit for the term, Area. In this unit students learn to compare the areas of surfaces. They do this by using informal units to measure area by covering the surface in rows or column without gaps or overlaps. Students learn to explain and record areas by referring to the number and type of informal units used, e.g The area of this surface is 6 books. Below is a short video to introduce the topic.

I just had to share the wonderful work our students have done creating their research posters. Each child chose an under the sea creature and used a variety of sources to create a poster about them. Students independently selected important information and composed their own sentences to create an information poster. We learnt about a variety of creatures ranging from dolphins, sharks, seahorse, octopus, stingray and dugongs to some very strange fish called the Leafy Sea Dragon and Sarcastic Fringehead. The students are also working on their digital presentation using the information they have learnt to create a slideshow. Awesome job! Well done everyone!

This weekend we will be celebrating Father's Day. 1Red have been busy creating a lovely gift for their dad. I particularly enjoyed reading the special messages the children wrote in their cards. We hope you have a great day. Relax and enjoy being spoilt!!
